Rugged Up for a Winter’s Walk

2008-6-15_willow

It was cold on Sunday but both my gals wanted to get outside and my wife was keen to have them out of her hair for a little while so she could get some work done. We decided to take our dog Mojo out for a walk. Willow decided she needed to take her own ‘dog’ Ginger out too. We rugged up in scarves and hats. Just outside the front door there’s some kind of mutant iris plant that grows like a weed on steroids. It’s blooming in the middle of winter - a real floral overachiever. Willow walks out of the front door and immediately heads for the iris and picks a few choice blooms. Of course I had my camera handy and caught her in the act.

My other gal, Juniper, had Mojo and headed up the steep driveway to the road. After snapping a few at Willow and the flowers, I turned and caught Juniper with Mojo. We had a great walk and a few more images from it can be found below. Hope you’ve had a great one too!

Emotional Economics of Globalization

My daughter has a nice big globe sitting on her desk. When I venture in her room, I frequently sit on her desk and spin the globe. Over the weekend, I was sitting on her desk chatting and unconsciously spinning the globe. I stopped the spin near my home town in Texas. I jabbed my finger there and had a good look.
texas_globe

I grew up in a place where you spend most of your childhood thinking of ways to get the hell outta there. Well, here I am sitting on a desk on the opposite side of the globe. On the side of a mountain near Melbourne, Australia. Saying “G’day Mate” and driving on the wrong side of the road.

I now find myself often thinking of the family and friends back in my hometown. I think that it wouldn’t be so bad to be back in that little town again. I think that I’d love for my children to grow up with their cousins, aunts, uncles, second cousins, and … hell, basically everyone in the town, close to them.

But, we’re still here. On the other side. What keeps us in the land of parrots and animals with pouches? It’s hard to describe. I think it’s lifestyle, career, my wife’s parents in Sydney and … money. It’d take a wad of cash to move and re-establish back home. And … there’s something about living in the land of Oz. Something magical that I just can’t describe. Maybe it’s a a real fantasy land for a fella from a small town in Texas. I dunno. One day, I’ll go back home. Until then … I’ll be Down Under.

PhotoHunt: Laughter and Living

My daughter reacting to my impersonation of her dancing and singing with her ipod.

Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Continue to learn. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is.Mary Anne Radmacher

When It Gets Darkest the Stars Come Out

hope

I created this out of a request that came from Drew at Benspark.com. Drew posted

“what I am looking for is to get as many photos of people from all over the world who are holding messages of hope. Think Good Morning America’s “Three Words”. I am going to compile those photos into a video set to music to give to the family. Hope is what is keeping this family going and hope is what I want to give them.”

Best wishes to the Machinski family … always look to the stars for hope and inspiration.

Big Mountain on Little Red Planet

lrp_olympus

In celebration of the 25 May 2008 Phoenix Mars Lander’s touchdown on the Little Red Planet, I decided to republish some of my earlier Mars related edutoons.

From Wikipedia:

Phoenix is a robotic spacecraft on a space exploration mission on Mars under the Mars Scout Program. The scientists conducting the mission will use instruments aboard the Phoenix lander to search for environments suitable for microbial life on Mars, and to research the history of water there. The multi-agency program is headed by the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory at the University of Arizona, under the direction of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The program is a partnership of universities in the United States, Canada, Switzerland, the Philippines, Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Lockheed Martin Space Systems, and other aerospace companies.[1]

Phoenix is the sixth successful landing on Mars, out of twelve total international attempts (the sixth successful landing of seven American attempts). It is the third successful static lander and the first since Viking 2, and as of 2008 the most recent spacecraft to land successfully on Mars. It is also the first successful landing on a polar region of Mars.

Weekend Snapshot - A Purrrfect Kitty?

harley_sleeping

Hello my name is Harley. This was me on Sunday night. Hehehe … I’m only pretending to be asleep. I close my eyes but keep my paws ready to pounce. I do this when I’ve been naughty. My human pets find it really hard to chastise me when I am in the cute position with my eyes shut. Oh, I just can’t wait for that nimcompoop dog to wander by tail wagging. She’ll jump outta her skin when I leap to life in a nano second.

OK, see ya later … I gotta keep pretending to be cute and innocent

PhotoHunt 113: Bad Hair

2008-6-8_willow

TNchick has a great weekly challenge. This weeks challenge was titled Bad Hair. Last night, after Willow’s bath, I towel dried her hair. She jumped away from the towel and started hopping around acting like she was Godzilla. We all died laughing and I couldn’t resist this shot. She has some very unruly hair!

Resilient Spirit

I’ve spent the majority of the past three days at the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency annual Conference. It was a fantastic conference and well worth the time spent. Today was the last day and during a very moving presentation this doodle materialised on my notebook.

What I saw emerging as I was doodling was a storm cloud with torrential rain and hail. I added a stylized sun. From under the devestation of the storm, flowers persevere and shine in the sun.

Also available as a T-Shirt

or card

I scanned the doodle in Kooka, traced the paths using Inkscape and then added the color with the GIMP (all opensource software freely available for download).

I hope you like it. Cheers - dale.
