Sometimes I am compelled to take a photo only to find that the photo is sub-standard. This is when I start thinking about why the shot is so compelling and how could I capture that essence on the camera. I keep thinking and experimenting until I get an image that works.

I came upon this boardwalk while walking around a nature reserve near my house. I really liked the look of this boardwalk cutting across this grassy/swampy area. After taking many photos, none really capture the essence of what I was seeing. I kept looking at it and then realised what intrigued me most was the line of the curve plus the muted contrast between boards and grass. I started experimenting with zoom and tilting my camera until I hit upon this image. This is what stopped me at this spot in the first place. Just tiliting my camera gave me that perfect perspective to show off the contrast and the curve.

  3. You know, I’ve taken shots similar to this one of a boardwalk in an area near my place. And I never thought about doing what you’ve done here. Awesome job! I’m going to try that next time I’m down by the boardwalk. :D

  7. Very nice photo Dale. One does not see such sights as a boardwalk like this very often in life. I like its curves and all the wonderful nature surrounding it.

    Good Luck!

  10. Nice shot of this curvy boardwalk. It looks like an elongated sea bird at first glance.

I like the wisps of nature surrounding the walkway.

  12. I find this one of the hardest things to achieve. To portray what I saw to my viewers. Unfortunately at times with my children I do not have the luxury of the time to stop and experiment, but this is what you need to do. Sometime the best shot is your first and other times it’s just a matter of trying to you get it right. Often my kids will run offer or and explore elsewhere if I take too long, this is ok in quit spots not so good in places where it is busy.

  14. I like the way this looks like it’s not so much lying on the grass but as if it’s winding its way to heaven. Very interesting angle!

  20. This is a creative bird/aviary type shot.

Why? As I look up to the curve I see the neck and bill of a bird. More specifically, a pelican and the curve supplies that species’ distinctive fish catching pouch below the head…

    Unique and eye catching!

  22. I think your explanation of how you arrived at this shot defines for me what I love most about your photographs.

They convey a sense of personality, maybe the word I mean is intimacy. When I look at the boardwalk I can feel the grass, sense the weathered wood and the curve is so gentle.

And all from tilting the camera and waiting for it to see what you saw!
