For this weeks Creative Photo, I peered into cosmic genesis and found the likeness of my little cherub gently encouraging infant stars into the Small Magellanic Cloud crèche.

If your curious about this small satellite galaxy NGC 602 (pictured) near the Small Magellanic Cloud it’s 200 thousand light-years distant. Surrounded by natal gas and dust, NGC 602 is featured in this stunning Hubble image of the region. Fantastic ridges and swept back shapes strongly suggest that energetic radiation and shock waves from NGC 602′s massive young stars have eroded the dusty material and triggered a progression of star formation moving away from the cluster’s center. At the estimated distance of the Small Magellanic Cloud, the nebula background picture spans about 200 light-years, but a tantalizing assortment of background galaxies are also visible in the sharp Hubble view. The background galaxies are hundreds of millions of light-years or more beyond NGC 602.

2008-7-27_willow_sun

Here’s this weeks Weekend Snapshot. Between running around with the fam and rebuilding my computer, I didn’t take many photos. However, Willow and I did run down to the park on Saturday morning. The sun was out for the first time in several weekends and she enjoyed getting out of the house.

It wasn’t until I returned home and downloaded the images that I noticed the sun rays and halo effects on these images.

Disco Divas Dance Dance Dance

2008-7-19_disco_party2

On Saturday night, both my young’uns were invited to a disco party for an 11 year old friend. Juniper had a grand ol’ time to very loud music, bad acoustics in the boy scout hall, flashing lights, a smoke machine and flickering necklaces. My youngest wanted to have a good time but I think she was just too little to appreciate the loud chaos that erupted. Before we (the old farts) ducked out of the party with the little one and went for a nice dinner, I took a few snaps of the disco divas in action. They came out better than I expected.

The girls and I popped through the automatic car wash. I know, that sounds really exciting. Willow was having a good time watching all the brushes go past her window however, Juniper was not so interested.

Saturday Brunch on Lygon Street

This is Mamma Planet and our little one, Willow, reading a book while waiting for our brunch on Lygon Street, Carlton, Melboune. It was a little cold and a little windy but, you just can’t beat an outdoor meal here.

Lygon Street is one of the great food precincts of Melbourne. It has its origins in the early immigration of Italian migrants to Melbourne and, in particular, to Carlton. It also owes much of its growth and popularity as a eating out destination to the students from Melbourne University, who frequented the street long before it became fashionable with business people.

Lygon Street has the biggest selection of Italian restaurants and cafes of anywhere in Australia, and was the first suburb in Melbourne to promote eating outdoors and tables and chairs on footpaths. Lygon Street is a great place to spend a warm summer’s evening with a group of friends, especially if you’re sitting in the garden cafe of one of the terraces that line the street.
